Better to wear less heavy armor. The reason behind it is that you do attacks to your enemy with heavy armors while you will be given a penalty. On the other hand your armored combat skill will be increased with heavy armor while you are attacking someone. As this rise, the penalty for fighting in heavy armor is reduced. How to keep a balance between increased armored combat skill and gaining a penalty, it is depending on your playing experience and your purpose.
The second piece of advice is to maneuver yourself behind an enemy. Both players and monsters gains larger amount of damage when they are having back hit.
